Charlotte Amalie Main Street — Current Improvements & Next Goals
Fifteenand9Main launched the exciting rehabilitation process of two buildings in April 2024, focusing on revitalizing the structures while preserving their unique architectural features. As part of this transformation, the developers aim to create vibrant retail and residential spaces that contribute to the downtown community and promote sustainable practices, including the integration of solar energy.
Main Street Roof
The roof is a Danish-style hip roof without a ridge or overlap, designed in part to withstand heavy winds. Following damage, we replaced the old roof and installed a new one that closely resembled the previous design.
First Floor, Main Street
During the Danish era, the first floor was likely used for storage. Eventually, it was transformed into retail space, featuring three separate booths like most first floors on Main Street. During the 15 Main project rehabilitation process, we merged the three shops on the first floor in Charlotte Amalie into one large area that can easily be divided into three bays or utilized as a single retail operation. Additionally, a storage area is located in the back.
The Pigeon Coop (Located on the second floor of Main Street)

The pigeon coop was named because, while empty, it housed many pigeons. It was once the home of the United Home of Benniton brand. The new hip roof will cover the new room. Although future use has yet to be determined, the developers are considering creating a space for local artisans.
Back Street Apartments
9 Wimmelskafts Gade (Back Street), designed in 1986 by St. Thomas’s esteemed architects Robert and Donna DeJongh, once housed the renowned fashion designer Liz Claiborne. We determined that the most effective use of the space would be to create four one-bedroom apartments and one penthouse studio to help address downtown housing challenges.
About Fifteenand9Main: On September 4, 2024, Fifteenand9Main received notification from the U.S. Department of the Interior that it had passed the first step of the three-step process to qualify Dronningens Gade 15 (15 Main Street) for a federal historic preservation tax incentive.
