Crown House, Charlotte Amalie: Restoration by Crystal Blue Operations

Written by the Team at Fifteenand9Main

Crown House was reportedly built around 1740 — one of the oldest surviving structures on St. Thomas. Its name reflects two nineteenth-century governors who served the Danish Crown.

One of them, Peter von Scholten, proclaimed emancipation on July 3, 1848 — an island-defining event still remembered each year. He was later tried in Denmark, initially stripped of his pension, and eventually cleared before his death.
